A Call that Impacted
Read on the Wednesday, July 29th radio program.
Hi Dr. Laura…years ago, I heard a call on your show from a woman who was frustrated because her husband’s socks were always left on the floor. Shortly afterward, you took another call from a woman who said she would give anything to find her late husband’s socks on the floor again.
I don’t remember much else from those conversations, but I never forgot the lesson: perspective and choice.
That day, I realized I could choose my battles. I could choose to love my husband by taking care of the little things that make his life—and really, our life together—a little easier. I could choose not to complain. I realized it took far more energy to be upset about a pair of socks than it did to simply pick them up. It felt like a small, secret gift I could give him.
That lesson has stayed with me ever since. I think I was a newlywed when I heard those calls, and now we’re about to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.
Our marriage has been wonderful. It certainly hasn’t been without hardships, especially raising a critically ill child, but I’m grateful to say that socks on the floor, the direction of the toilet paper roll, and all the other little things have never become sources of conflict for us. We made the choice not to sweat the small stuff and instead cherish the incredible gift of having each other.
Thank you for teaching me a lesson that has quietly shaped our marriage for the past twenty years.
With gratitude,
Amelie and Simon
P.S. We met in Ojai, California!
