A Thank You
Read on the Wednesday, May 27th radio program.
Hi Dr. Laura, my dad listened to your show for years, and every time I came to visit, we would drive around listening to it together. He was truly a fantastic dad, and I am so grateful for him.
He unfortunately passed away suddenly at age 59. Because he was a single father, I am now managing his estate, small business, house, pets, and my teenage siblings—all while living states away. I am also engaged and was planning to get married this year. My grandparents are having a really hard time, so I now anticipate needing to care for them as well.
There is a large part of me that wants to list all my struggles to receive sympathy and to have others recognize my hard work. I have been battling the tendency to fall into the sadness of it all. I think my dad may have led me to your YouTube video titled “Tried-and-True Advice,” because I just watched it and heard you say there is no equivalent to “take it like a man.”
I don’t need my efforts to be recognized by anyone or to overanalyze everything. I just need to keep moving forward—feel the sadness and grief, but not let it stop me. I can take it like a man, just as my dad would say.
My dad always said he never had to worry about me because he knew I could handle anything. He wasn’t wrong.
Thank you for helping me see my strength again, and thank you for contributing to some wonderful memories I have with my dad.
Nicole
