Choose Wisely, Treat Kindly
Thursday, May 14th radio program.
Dear Dr. Laura - A little background: my husband introduced me to your radio show in 1994 when we were dating. Your wisdom immediately resonated with me. I have heard you say many times, “Choose wisely and treat kindly.”
I have always believed I married one of the good ones, but these past months have not only confirmed that belief—they have provided undeniable proof. My husband of 30 years deserves a medal, or at the very least, many meals cooked for him, laundry done for him, and his vehicle vacuumed and washed.
I broke my right leg on February 20th. Since then, I have not been able to drive, walk, cook meals, clean, or do laundry, and I needed help showering—you get the picture. On top of all of that, our adult son has autism and requires assistance with all daily living skills. We are his primary caregivers.
Since I could barely take care of myself, my husband had to take on the care of our son by himself. This was no easy task. About five days after I broke my leg, our son developed a UTI. He became very irritable, refused to wear clothes, and would urinate indiscriminately throughout the house. My husband literally had to do laundry and mop the floors five times a day for nearly two weeks.
Our son was prescribed antibiotics and initially recovered, but about a week after finishing the medication, the UTI returned. This led to another two weeks of intensive laundry and cleaning.
I firmly believe that if I were a vindictive, mean, or unkind wife, my husband would not have lifted a finger to help me when I needed him most. I find myself in tears thinking about how grateful I am for him.
Thank you, Dr. Laura. Over the last 30 years, whenever I didn’t feel like being kind and loving, your voice has come to mind: “Choose wisely and treat kindly.” No truer words have been spoken.
Sincerely,
Susan
