Marriage Book
Read on the Tuesday, July 7th radio program.
Dear Dr. Schlessinger, I recently finished reading The Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage and wanted to thank you for writing it. It was one of those rare books that not only made me think about my own life and marriage, but also stirred memories and reflections I wasn’t expecting.
My husband and I have been married for more than 14 years and have a strong, healthy relationship, yet your book still challenged me to consider areas where I can grow. More than that, it prompted me to reflect on my parents’ marriage. They divorced when I was 27 after 30 years together, and even now, at 38 with a family of my own, their divorce still affects me.
As I read, I found myself wishing that one—or ideally both—of my parents had encountered your message years ago. I can’t help but think that if even one of them had embraced the principles you teach, their story might have ended differently. Instead, bitterness, discontent, and distance gradually took root.
What struck me most was the hope woven throughout your book—the reminder that meaningful change can begin with just one person choosing a different path. I hope many couples read your work and pause before giving up on their marriage, especially when abuse, addiction, or adultery are not factors. Sometimes one person’s willingness to change can make more of a difference than they realize.
Thank you again for sharing your wisdom. I sincerely hope your book reaches many more readers. It has certainly left a lasting impression on me.
Warm regards,
M.
