My Daughter’s Wedding Vows
Read on the Wednesday, July 22nd radio program.
Dear Dr. Laura, I’m writing about two things. First, I want to thank you for all the advice and wisdom you’ve shared over the years. I’ve been listening to you since 1996, and your guidance has helped me improve my marriage and enrich the lives of my entire family.
Although I didn’t have the benefit of your wisdom when I married my wonderful wife 37 years ago, I was fortunate enough to choose wisely. Ever since, I’ve made it a point to protect my woman and treat her as the girlfriend she still is.
The second reason I’m writing is to share a story from my oldest daughter’s wedding a few months ago. Before the officiant led the traditional vows to love, honor, and cherish, my daughter and her now-husband exchanged several personal vows that reflected their relationship.
When my daughter reached the last line of her vows, she turned toward me and said, “And as a shout-out to my dad, I have no doubt that for the rest of my life, you will happily swim across shark-infested waters to get me a lemonade—and then go back a second time if you forgot the umbrella.”
I wish I had a picture of that moment because I had the biggest smile on my face. I looked over at my wife, who was smiling just as broadly. Then I looked at the wedding party, where my other two daughters were serving as bridesmaids, and they both had huge smiles because they knew exactly what that saying meant.
It was incredibly rewarding to realize that all those years of sharing and reinforcing your wisdom with my children had taken root so deeply that my daughter chose to include one of your lessons in her wedding vows. I’m confident she chose wisely in her husband, and I truly believe that your wisdom, passed on through me, played an important role in helping her make that choice.
I will be forever grateful for what you’ve done for my life and for all that you continue to do for your listeners.
Thank you,
A Listener
