Navigating Tough Times
Read on the Monday, May 4th radio program.
Hello Dr. Laura, I have been listening to your show for several years, including when you were on the AM radio station, and I deeply appreciate your wisdom and guidance.
This past year has been particularly challenging for our family. Like you, both my husband and I have always prioritized staying in shape, eating well, and maintaining good health. Yet we learned that even with our best efforts, significant health challenges can arise.
Within one week, both my daughter and I were diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, annual mammograms allowed for early detection. We have completed chemotherapy and surgery, and will soon finish radiation therapy.
Meanwhile, my fit, vegan husband experienced a stroke last summer. I had always imagined that strokes happen to those who are overweight, out of shape, or hypertensive—but that was not the case for him.
I’m writing to share that even amid unimaginable challenges, there are silver linings. Our bonds as a family have grown stronger. We have learned to express our emotions openly, maintain a positive attitude, and practice patience—not only with each other but in life in general. I no longer get upset over small inconveniences.
Lately, when I hear what I imagine are major issues for your callers, they sometimes seem minor to me. As always, you guide them toward possible solutions, and I would simply remind them to focus on what truly matters and let the small stuff go.
Thank you for the work you do—it has been a source of comfort and perspective for our family.
All the best,
Cynthia
