No Gesture Is Too Small
Read on the Tuesday, July 14th radio program.
Hi Dr. Laura, I have been listening to you for quite a few years. While I think I was a good wife before, I believe I have become a fantastic wife because of what I’ve learned from you.
I was talking with my 20-year-old daughter the other day, and I said, “I choose every day to get up and love your dad.” She laughed and said, “Oh, you choose to love him every day?”
I told her, “No, that’s not exactly what I mean. I make the choice every day to want him in my life, to make a positive difference in his life, and to show him that he is important to me. I make a conscious effort to make sure he’s happy being married to me, and in return, I receive so much love from him. So yes, it’s a choice I make every single day.”
I believe there is no gesture too small. It can be as simple as sending a text that says, “I love you,” making him a cup of tea because he enjoys it, or giving him a hug or a kiss. All of those little things matter so much.
For Valentine’s Day, my husband transformed our living room into a painting studio. He set up easels, bought a “Painting on the Gogh” video, filled a table with chocolates and sparkling cider, and created a playlist of love songs from the ‘80s and ‘90s. We spent a few hours painting together, and it was one of the most thoughtful and memorable gifts I’ve ever received.
When you take the time to invest in someone, truly love them, and make them feel loved, you get that love back tenfold. Never stop doing the little things. And stop nagging and sweating the small stuff.
Thank you,
Nicole
