Could your marriage survive an affair? It's a waste of time and money to go to counseling with a serial cheater. In those cases, I say get a good divorce lawyer instead of a marriage therapist.

But, when the infidelity appears to be a stupid, one-off mistake instead of a pattern, I’m probably going to encourage reconciliation --- especially when there are young kids involved. After giving that exact advice to a recent caller, she asked for tips from other Dr. Laura listeners who’d been in her position. How had they managed to continue living with a man who deceived them?
